OLD POSTS

I've been lazy and since I don't upload any of these albums myself, most of them seem to have been taken down from mediafire. I was just going to discreetly re-up all of them... but the number kept getting bigger and I don't want to sit at my computer all day. So I'm just going to leave this here and let people comment if they want something re-upped that has been taken down.

p.s. google it first! someone else probably uploaded it!

BURNING WITCH- CRIPPLED LUCIFER

This is my candidate for the most brutally-heavy album(s) of all time. I say 'albums' because Crippled Lucifer compiles both of Burning Witch's full-lengths but they both operate on the same plane of soul-destroying doom metal. This is seriously the heaviest doom gets. No groove, riffs that exist solely to build tension that gives you chills, guitars tuned down to almost atonal frequencies and then the vocals. The singer for Burning Witch sounds like Bon Scott possessed by the most evil, fucked up, and anguished demon to ever be banished to the ninth circle. This is not for casual metal fans or people who don't like "sad" music... oh and I believe Steve Albini recorded both albums so yeah, they sound awesome!

Tempest - Passages

Cruuuuushing local (Vancouver) blackened crusty doomy sludgey metal... I'm not well versed in metal sub-genres or culture or whatever but I'm sure Cam or probably anyone else on the blog would be able to give you a better (or more concise) classification of their sound. I've posted this with permission from their singer Roger, a great dude. There are only 13 more copies of their LP left (according to their bandcamp) which you can order through that site. I think. Snatch them up before they tour Europe (!!!)

My favorite jam is Hierarchy of Greed.

WITCHFINDER GENERAL- DEATH PENALTY

File this band under Party-Doom, a genre that doesn't exist but chances are you totally get what that would imply if you enjoy Pentagram's faster numbers. Bitchin' riffs, solos that pierce the haze, stupid lyrics about drinking shroom tea and oh yeah, the implied rape of the album cover because... well, they were moronic thugs who, when it comes down to it, are the Venom of doom in terms of musicianship. Dig it if you dare...

THE GOSLINGS- GRANDEUR OF HAIR

Today I went to my city's urban-center to buy some books my folks wanted for christmas. Aside from scoring a copy of Daniel Johnston's art-book for twenty bucks as well as the stuff I was looking for, it was pure hell. Masses of people all shuffling around, no one smiling, people shoving into other people while saying "excuse me" under their breath and not bothering to make eye contact, eyeing that bluray Friends boxset they can't wait to get their greasy little mitts on (sorry Grace!)... this time of year really does suck.

In a rare and unfortunate occurrence, I had no tunes to drown out the frenzy of "should I get an I-phone or a blackberry" but I kept thinking of this album for some reason. Maybe because it's some of the ugliest, sludgiest, creepo doom/drone I've ever heard and the thought of it blasting over some loudspeaker, thus making everyone in the store feel like jumping off of a bridge was very satisfying to me... ahhh the holidays. Anyway, The Goslings are from Florida, record all of their albums on cassette and never tour... sounds kinda douchey and hey, maybe they are but when the music is this perfect, I could care less. Imagine a not boring, more psychedelic Sunn O))) and you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're getting into.

STONED

Linked HERE is a documentary that was brought to my attention today. A pretty recent documentary on the American doom/stoner-metal underground from the 70's onward. Lots of great interviews, archival footage and, oh yeah! GREAT music!

PENTAGRAM- RELENTLESS

This is a bit of a no-brainer but as this popped into my mind, the idea that some people may not have heard this also came to mind. Satan-calling, Sabbath-worshiping, dope-smoking, heavy-riffing, creepy-vibing. This record has it all. Pentagram are a truly-great and under-appreciated band till this day. Be Forewarned!
